Finnegan flying in Singapore

Emily Finnegan showed she can match it with the world’s best after claiming her maiden win in Singapore on Sunday. Finnegan steered home the race favourite, Gol Goal in the first race of the day on Sunday for Shane Baertschiger with a perfectly timed patient ride.

Gol Goal dropped straight to the tail of the field from gate one and was happy to sit at the back of the field for the first half of the race. At the 500m mark Finnegan pulled the five-year-old to the outside of the field and at the 400m mark let down with her run. At the 200m the gelding had hit the front and ran on strongly to record a 1.5 length win.

Finnegan was very close to recording a double and bookending the card with a brave front running ride on Mr Mosa but went down in a close finish to run second behind winner Sebastian Bach by a head.

Before she headed to Singapore, Finnegan’s goal was to ride a winner and after Sunday’s efforts, she can put a big tick next to that goal. Finnegan has another week left in Singapore with two race meetings left on Friday 29 June and Sunday 1 July.

In other news, 2016 Dux of the UBET SA Apprentice Academy, Matthew Poon returned to form at Sha Tin with a double aboard Happy Meteor and Mighty Maverick. Poon spent two weeks in Singapore last year where he rode six winners and six placing from 26 rides including a Group 3 win aboard Faaltless in the Garden City Trophy. Poon is set to spend another stint in Singapore, this time for three weeks from the 25th of July to the 13th of August under the care of Shane Baertschiger.
