Webster’s Armada Set to Attack the Quorn Cup

The Anthony Webster trained Grand Armada will line up in his first Country Cup on Saturday when the last start winner makes his way from his Gawler stables to Quorn.

Grand Armada finished third behind Miracles of Life on debut back in 2013 and while his career may not have hit the heights of the filly he faced that day, he has gone on to be a super consistent horse for Webster since joining his stable in 2016.

While he’s not a regular on the dirt, Grand Armada has a great record on the surface with one win and three placing’s from four starts. Another positive for the horse heading into Saturday’s feature is that he is the only runner to win over the Cup distance of 1900m. Alice Lindsay sticks with the horse after her last start win aboard him and the Port Augusta Cup winning jockey has enjoyed a good season on dirt tracks this year with five wins at Port Augusta alone.

Grand Armada’s strongest test will come from Country Cup stalwart Eigelstein who was third in the Port Augusta and Roxby Downs Cups this year and also finished third in this race last year. Apprentice Kenny Lau will take the ride aboard Eigelstein and will claim 3kg which will give him a vital 1kg weight advantage over Lindsay and Grand Armada which could be a big help down the home straight on Saturday.

The interesting runner of the field is the ten-year-old maiden My Friend Riley who has been everywhere from Birdsville to Bedourie to Jamestown and Roxby Downs and now he’s set to line up in the Quorn Cup on Saturday. The gelding was only half a length off a win two starts back but was just over nine lengths off Grand Armada when they clashed at Port Augusta last start.

There’s no doubt that the Quorn locals will be cheering on the Talia Harrison trained Undoubtable who will be having her fourth start for the trainer. The ex-Sydney galloper hasn’t won since 2015 but a bit of local knowledge of the track could give him that vital edge required to get over the line.

Mark Moosha’s Betterthanyouthink and Bryan Holtham’s Quedoutes round out the field of six for Saturday’ feature and while stranger things have happened, it looks as if it will be a battle of the top two with Grand Armada and Eigelstein likely to battle out the finish.
