Kiwi legend returning to Oakbank

Legendary Kiwi trainer John Wheeler is set to return to Oakbank next month with several jumpers.

Wheeler hasn’t raced a horse at the iconic Hills track for a number of years, but plans to bring up to three horses for this year’s revamped Easter carnival.

Heading the list is Abacus, which is likely to contest the Von Doussa Steeplechase on the carnival’s opening day, Sunday, April 5.

Less-experienced jumping stablemates Grinner and Quaff could also make the trip to Oakbank. Wheeler – a New Zealand Hall of Fame trainer – said he is a big fan of the new-look Oakbank program, which will see racing on Sunday and Wednesday leading into Easter, then again on Easter Saturday.

Meanwhile Victorian trainer Dan O’Sullivan is also set to have a runner at Oakbank in the form of Valhalla Princess, which has already raced over jumps three times in Victoria.

Before heading across the border Valhalla Princess will race on the flat at Terang next week.

O’Sullivan said stablemate and capable flat performer So Belafonte was a chance to accompany Valhalla Princess to Oakbank.
