Young quartet catches eye at Morphettville Parks

Eye-catching performances from a quartet of promising young horses were a feature of Saturday’s nine-race meeting at Morphettville Parks.

So You Can, Silver Lining, Dixon Street and Almadrava all notched wins that suggest bright futures, potentially at a higher level.

Two-year-old So You Can atoned for an unlucky debut with a convincing win in the opener (1250m) for the Macdonald-Gluyas yard. Jockey Jason Holder eased down on the odds-on pop near the line, and the son of So You Think appears to have plenty of upside.

Will Clarken’s three-year-old Silver Lining showed an exciting turn of foot to win race four (1000m), overcoming traffic in the straight to charge home and salute for jockey Jake Toeroek. It was an eye-catching win at just her third race start. The unlucky run of the race was Dimaggio, who missed the start, but finished well to take the runner-up cheque.

Dixon Street scored a memorable win on the middle day of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, benefiting from a superb ride by Georgina Cartwright, who managed to keep one eye on a potentially dangerous riderless horse and the other on the finishing post.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained three-year-old faced another set of challenges in race five on Saturday, most notably a wide path early in the 1300m event that forced jockey Lachy Neindorf to use some petrol to find a forward spot.

However, Dixon Street had no trouble remaining unbeaten this preparation, holding the field at bay and sailing to a convincing 1.25-length win – possibly the best performance on the program.

Almadrava – trained by Phillip Stokes – rounded out the day with an emphatic win over 1000m, aided by a patient ride by Kayla Crowther. The three-year-old daughter of Sebring only saw clear air late in the race, but charged through the gap to win by a neck from Devonte, which covered some extra ground. Appalachian continued its frustrating autumn for connections, again proving a handful for his jockey – this time Neindorf – before flashing home to finish fourth as a well-backed favourite.

Riding honours were shared, with Crowther (Bertwhistle and Almadrava) and Dominic Tourneur (Dreamed and Brimarvi Vehero) both notching doubles. Veteran Shayne Cahill was seen at his best in race two (1400m), biding his time at the back of the field on Enki before coming with a well-time run to cut down favourite Simply Dreaming.
