Hickmott’s day out on home track

Michael Hickmott had a day out on his home track at Murray Bridge on Saturday.

Promoter justified Hickmott’s self-assessment of poor placement first-up when he won the opening race on a quick back-up, before former New Zealander Aqueduct blitzed rivals by six lengths at his Australian debut.

Aqueduct has given the young trainer his share of headaches since coming to SA but looms as a horse with a bright future after he ran rivals ragged with Jessica Eaton in the saddle.

“It was very impressive,” Hickmott told Racing.com of the horse who has proven difficult to train.

“This is my first runner (for Andrew Campbell and owner Tommy Heptinstall), it’s great way to start.

“We’ve worked hard on this horse. Two or three weeks ago I thought this was an absolute moral wherever he went first-up, but he’s confused me, and he’s really had me on the back foot, I’m really impressed with him.”

Hickmott said Promoter was a horse who could be headed overseas after he bounced back from a first-up defeat when a heavily backed favourite at Morphettville on the Parks track last weekend.

“Major trainer error last Saturday,” Hickmott said.

“He’s a nice horse that will find his way to Hong Kong,” he said.

Eaton shared riding honours with Jason Holder after combining with the McEvoy stable and Resurge to win later in the day. Holder’s double came via Star Hill and Nipperkin, the latter scoring a deserved when she ran down Arkham Knight,

Meanwhile Phillip Stokes said Octane may have outgrown Adelaide after the smart sprinter made it six wins from seven starts for the stable at Flemington on Saturday.

“Full credit to Tommy ad Kayla and the team back in Adelaide, I’ve just had to keep him ticking over for the week,” Stokes said.

“Time has done him good, he’s a happy horse, he’s probably raced his way out of Adelaide now.”
