Dalasan, Behemoth, Extra Time among Spring Stakes noms

STAR South Australian Dalasan is poised to kick off his four-year-old campaign chasing successive wins in Saturday’s $120,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

Dalasan announced himself as a top line three-year-old when he powered past subsequent Group 1 Memsie Stakes winner Scales Of Justice first-up last year before heading to Flemington and winning the Group 2 Danehill Stakes.

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained galloper hasn’t raced since he beat all but potential superstar Russian Camelot home in the Group 1 SA Derby in May and was a given a solid hit-out at the Morphettville jump-outs last week with Jason Holder in the saddle.

For the feature the Macdonald/Gluyas stable has also nominated three-year-old Extra Time, who hasn’t raced since winning the Group 3 National Stakes at Morphettville in May.

The Adelaide weather will ultimately decide where David Jolly’s Behemoth will return to racing after he looked sharp winning a Balaklava trial last week.

Grand Syndicates racing manager Sam Lyons said the plan was to stay in Adelaide, but the rain could see the horse head to Melbourne.

“The Regal Roller (at Caulfield) is the back-up plan,’’ Lyons said.

Behemoth flashed home from well back to run fourth behind Begood Toya Mother in last year’s Regal Roller before coming back home to Adelaide and winning the Listed Penny Edition Stakes.

Richard and Chantelle Jolly have two nominations in the feature: Kemalpasa who trialled behind Behemoth at Balaklava, and promising mare Rainmoth who ran a super race first-up from a spell when she finished second behind Octane at Morphettville.
