Port Augusta

In 2011 Port Augusta Racing Club Celebrates 130 years since racing began.

Port Augusta is situated at the head of the Spencer Gulf and is the apex of the triangle formed by the three Northern cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla. The racecourse itself is situated 6km South East of the main city centre.

The racetrack is a sand track that is comprised of three different grades of sand with either oil or water used as a binding agent. The course itself is 2,100 metres in circumference and has a 400 metre long chute that joins the course proper at the 1,200 metre start.

Thoroughbred racing has a long history in Port Augusta and began when the City was a shipping port, linking South Australia's Outback to the world.

The Port Augusta Racing Club hosted its first race meeting in November 1881 and because of hot and dusty conditions, future race meetings were scheduled to be held in winter.

Port Augusta's central location sees it as the heart of horse racing in the Spencer Gulf, with the majestic Flinders Ranges providing a spectacular backdrop to the Port Augusta racecourse, and its facilities make it a premier site for racing.

Race Days

Feature Days for 2011 include Ladies PINK Day (a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation), and the Flinders Ranges & Outback Race Day, with another major event to be confirmed for the last race day of the season.

And of course there is the annual Port Augusta Cup with thousands attending the popular July race meeting which is always a day of great racing action, fashion and fun. Port Augusta's mild winter weather, fantastic location and great track always make this a much anticipated social event.
