The Oakbank Racing Club was formed in 1875 and conducted its first meeting in 1876. The Club enjoys a very special relationship with the South Australia public and for more than 130 years has attracted people to the Easter Carnival – young and old – from all parts of the state and from all demographic profiles. More recently the Club’s research has shown a significant increase in visitors from interstate and overseas.
More than 50,000 people attend the two day Easter Racing Carnival, making it the biggest picnic race meeting in the world. In 2009 a third meeting was added as a lead-up to the Easter Racing Carnival and in 2010 the inaugural 'Christmas in the Hills' race meeting was added, providing the opportunity for patrons to celebrate the festivities in a completely different atmosphere.
The Oakbank “experience” is unique – there is nothing like it in the world. Hundreds of families arrive early – many before dawn – and stay late into the night around their barbecues. Some even plan their annual holidays and arrive weeks before the Easter Carnival begins, ensuring their favourite camp site is secured and the firewood collected for their barbeques and all night camp fires.
Our sponsors are encouraged to share the “experience” and become part of the tradition which is Oakbank. This and the open air nature of the course – the stands are for viewing only – means that sponsor’s signage and presence on the course have maximum effect.
