Moreira Touches Down in Adelaide

Hong Kong based jockey Joao Moreira touched down in Adelaide this afternoon ahead of Schweppes Oaks Day at Morphettville tomorrow.

‘The Magic Man’ was excited to be in Adelaide for the UBET Festival of Racing and the early afternoon arrival time suited the Brazilian superstar. “It was great to be able to get in a bit earlier today than normal. It will give me more time to look at the form and relax which is important,” Moreira said.

While he still has some form to do, one horse he knows very well is the David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig trained Sheidel, who he will ride in the $1 Million Group 1 UBET Classic.

“She (Sheidel) is a pretty good chance. We’re two from two and the way how she’s done it with me on board, she gives me a good feeling we can come over here and do it again,” Moreira said.

Hong Kong based Moreira has gotten to know one of Adelaide’s favourite jockeys over the last few months, Matthew Poon. The Hong Kong apprentice spent close to two years in Adelaide before heading back home to ride in his homeland against Moreira.

“Matthew is going great. He’s probably the best of the younger guys in Hong Kong at the moment. He’s really making the most of his 10-pound claim which is important to get a start over there,” said Moreira.

And as for his knowledge of Adelaide?

“I don’t know much, but I’m looking forward to finding out!”

Catch Joao in action tomorrow at Morphettville Racecourse. General Admission tickets $15 and Gates Open at 10.30am
