Kangaroo Island Cup Hat-Trick on the Cards for Bruggemann

Trainer Nicole Bruggemann is confident she can claim a third straight Kangaroo Island Cup after her two runners, Centre Divider and Jestwin ran second and third in today’s final hit out before Saturday’s feature.

The Dennis O’Leary trained Red Menace was heavily backed from $6.50 to $2.90 in today’s BM80 over 1750m and stormed down the outside to claim the race by long neck for Raquel Clark over the Bruggemann pair.

Red Menace has now won twice around the Kangaroo Island track and will be hoping that he can do what Jestwin did last year, which was win on the Thursday and back it up with a win in the Cup.

Bruggemann was happy with the runs of both of her Cup hopefuls heading into Saturday.

“I’m very happy with both runners. They did exactly what we thought they’d do. I probably didn’t expect Red Menace to come flying home so fast at the finish but the longer race on Saturday will definitely suit both of them.” Bruggemann said.

Other Cup runners in the today’s 1750m were More Alpha who was four lengths off the winner and It’s Humphrey who finished 8.4 lengths last.

The fresh on the scene for Saturday’s Cup will be the Dan Shepherd trained Saturday Sorcerer. The eight-year-old will have to carry 62kg in the Cup which is 8kg over the minimum and 7.5kg more than any other horse.

While he’ll have to carry a big weight, he does have experience in big races with a second placing to his name in the 2017 Darwin Cup. He also has a fantastic record over the 1880m with two wins and two second placings from five starts.

A big supporter of racing on the island, Bruggemann is excited about her chances of a hat trick of wins after Novikov and Jestwin have saluted in the last two editions.

“Three in a row would be very nice, I don’t care which one wins.”

And regardless of the result on Saturday, you can guarantee she will be back for years to come.

“I just love coming over here. I think my horses travel well. We always try and get the same yards here and we always head down to the beach. We’d come even if we didn’t have horses!”
