Behemoth Back in Town to get Spring Campaign on Track

David Jolly’s promising four-year-old Behemoth will be looking to get his spring campaign back on track after a couple unlucky runs as he attempts to claim Saturday’s Penny Edition Stakes.

Over the years the Listed Penny Edition Stakes has been won by some of the greats of Australian racing including Gailo Chop, Southern Speed, Alcopop and Fields of Omagh. While Behemoth will start as a warm favourite in the race, it will be far from an easy task with highly credentialed horses like Waging War and Long Leaf desperate for their first win of the new season.

Behemoth had excuses when running fourth in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield last start which was won by the very promising Begood Toya Mother. This will be his first run over 1400m but he finished off strongly last start at Caulfield and will be doing his best work late under Todd Pannell. The Goodwood runner-up has plenty of talent and hopefully he can fly the flag for SA across the border over the spring carnival.

The Lindsay Park trained Long Leaf also contested the Regal Roller Stakes where he finished back in sixth place in his first-up run from a spell. The four year old has a fair resume with three Listed wins and placings in Group 2 &3 company to his name. In a short career he’s contested six Group 1 races and amassed $931k in prizemoney. The step up to 1400m looks perfect for him and the experience he’s had at the top level should mean he’s a huge show on Saturday.

Waging War was a real eye-catcher in the Group 3 Spring Stakes last start as he tried his best to catch his stablemate Dalasan down the straight. He’s a horse who barely runs a bad race and with his best form being over a mile, the 1400m will be no problems for the horse who is rock hard fit at the moment. Raquel Clark will ride for her bosses Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and she knows the horse extremely well, after finishing second in the Group 3 RA Lee aboard him on Goodwood Day.

Mildura Cup winner Husson Eagle arrives in Adelaide after having a month’s break since that victory in July. His win over 1400m was exceptional that day, storming home late for the victory. The eight-year-old definitely has the class to match it with this field with one win and six placings in Listed company throughout his career. Trainer Patrick Payne has an outstanding record when bringing his horses to Adelaide and while the horse is getting on, you can’t rule the wily out veteran out in this.

Last start winners Vieira and Amberdi are up in grade off their last outings but both have good chances on their best form. Sue Jaensch’s mare Amberdi is undefeated in two starts over the 1400m and has an outstanding record at Morphettville for three wins from five starts while Vieira’s jockey, Georgina Cartwright is in super form, currently leading the SA Metropolitan Jockey standings with five wins already this season.
