Snitzkraft upstages rivals to claim Wylie

The Phillip Stokes stable sprung an early spring surprise when Snitzkraft led throughout in the $100,000 TAB W H Wylie Handicap (1100m) at Morphettville.

The Stokes stable went into Saturday with three runners but was forced to scratch their number one seed Seemingly Discreet after she injured herself on Friday leaving Snitzkraft and stablemate Shamino to fight out the finish.

Tommy Stokes said there was no doubting that Snitzkraft was the least fancied of the trio leading in.

“He would have been down the bottom, he would have been third pick,’’ Stokes said post-race.

“He was rock hard fit,’’ he said.

It capped another big day at the office for winning Todd Pannell, his third winner for the afternoon to share riding honours with Jason Holder.

The Wylie was a tactical sprint, Barend Vorster riding aggressively aboard Ef Troop to post the red-hot favourite Garner three-wide throughout and the pair just couldn’t make an impression as Shamino powered home late to grab second spot book a return to Melbourne during the spring.

“Unfortunately Garner never really took us into the race, to his credit he kept coming,’’ Shamino’s jockey Paul Gatt said.

“They ran the last 600m in 33.91secs, so he’s run super,’’ he said.

Tommy Stokes said Seemingly Discreet was unlucky to injury herself in a seemingly innocuous circumstances on Friday and could not recover in time for the race.

“She got a little kick which turned into a hematoma, but she should be right going forward and we can find something else for her now,’’ he said.
